*As we move forward in our Mini-Checkers Winter Season, we will be enforcing a strict no tolerance policy. If a player's behavior is inadequate, they will receive one fair warning. If that player continues said behavior, they will be removed from the ice. It is our job to make sure everyone enjoys their hockey experience at the Extreme Ice Center*

10U Half-Ice Observations

We were pleased with the first half-ice experience for our 10U age division this past Saturday. The play on the puck was more consistent and players received more puck touches as a result. We do recognize that there are some elements that need improvement. As we move along with the Winter 2020 season, we will consistently evaluate the half-ice game format and find ways to make it better. Our goal is to capture data as we move along so we can actually see if half-ice hockey is indeed producing the outcomes we are working towards. In the meantime, here are some immediate updates we will make to the 10U half-ice games:

Scoreboard

Each half-ice game will have one scorekeeper that will keep stats and update the score on a flip scoreboard for spectators to see.

Line Changes

We will work with our coaches to streamline line changes as we move ahead. Depending on where the puck is on the ice on a line change:

  • The defending team will take possession of the puck and regroup behind their net.
  • The attacking team will stand in the center area of the zone and wait for the defensive team to regroup before forechecking.

This should provide some more fluidity to the line change process and see more activity and less transition time.

Penalties

Moving forward, a player serving a penalty will return to the bench instead of standing in the penalty box. That player will miss the remainder of their current shift thus creating a man advantage opportunity. That penalty will carry over through the following shift as well, so a team will play a man down for the minimum of one 90 second shift. Should a team be assessed two penalties concurrently, that team will play 3 on 5.

Please let me know if you have any questions as we move ahead. I look forward to seeing most of our teams back on the ice for practice this evening.

See you on the ice!
