Mini Checkers and Metro Blackout Weekend (2/21 to 2/23)

By Cullen Baines 02/20/2020, 5:45pm EST

Hello Mini Checkers and Metro Families,

This is a gentle reminder that this weekend is a blackout weekend for all Mini Checkers and Metro programming. There are no games or practices for 6U, 8U, or Metro teams from Friday to Sunday. The Extreme Ice Center is hosting the Carolina Amateur Hockey Association playoffs. We encourage our families to come support our 14U, 16U, and 18U National Boud teams as they compete to see who will represent the Carolinas at Nationals.

Please view the weekend schedule and results via the CAHA web page: https://www.carolinahockey.org/cahachampionshiptournaments

We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.

The certification is completely free and available to anyone. We recommend that all parents familiarize themselves with the SafeSport information as awareness should yield a safer space for our kids. If you are interested in obtaining a SafeSport certification:

1. Please obtain a FREE USA Hockey Volunteer Membership via the link: https://membership.usahockey.com/

2. Sign up for the FREE SafeSport certification class with your new USA Hockey Volunteer Membership number via the link: https://safesport.org/authentication/register?token=71d4f2f9-bddb-4e6d-bb2a-37211b8999d9

10U Half-Ice Observations

We were pleased with the first half-ice experience for our 10U age division this past Saturday. The play on the puck was more consistent and players received more puck touches as a result. We do recognize that there are some elements that need improvement. As we move along with the Winter 2020 season, we will consistently evaluate the half-ice game format and find ways to make it better. Our goal is to capture data as we move along so we can actually see if half-ice hockey is indeed producing the outcomes we are working towards. In the meantime, here are some immediate updates we will make to the 10U half-ice games:

Scoreboard

Each half-ice game will have one scorekeeper that will keep stats and update the score on a flip scoreboard for spectators to see.

Line Changes

We will work with our coaches to streamline line changes as we move ahead. Depending on where the puck is on the ice on a line change:

  • The defending team will take possession of the puck and regroup behind their net.
  • The attacking team will stand in the center area of the zone and wait for the defensive team to regroup before forechecking.

This should provide some more fluidity to the line change process and see more activity and less transition time.

Penalties

Moving forward, a player serving a penalty will return to the bench instead of standing in the penalty box. That player will miss the remainder of their current shift thus creating a man advantage opportunity. That penalty will carry over through the following shift as well, so a team will play a man down for the minimum of one 90 second shift. Should a team be assessed two penalties concurrently, that team will play 3 on 5.

12U Metro

Team Practice: Monday, January 13th

6:50 to 7:50 PM: All Teams

18U Metro

Team Practices: Monday, January 13th

7:30 to 8:30 PM: Flames and Sabres (Training Rink)

8:00 to 9:00 PM: Blackhawks and Lady Rush (Main Rink)

8:40 to 9:40 PM: Golden Seals and North Stars

Game Day: Wednesday, January 15th

8:00 to 9:00 PM: Blackhawks at Sabres

8:10 to 9:10 PM: Flames at Lady Rush

9:10 to 10:10 PM: Golden Seals at North Stars

This weekend will be a pre-scheduled black out date due to a MyHockey Tournament so there will be no Saturday ice times. We will pick things back up on Monday January 20th.

Please let me know if you have any questions as we move ahead. I look forward to seeing most of our teams back on the ice for practice this evening.

See you on the ice!
